How Cold Is It?

It’s cold today and the sky is brilliant blue. Tonight’s temperature is predicted to reach a low of minus 54, factoring in the wind-chill.

How cold is it? Think of the innate fear humans have of drowning … that final intake of breath, that horrific moment, when lungs screaming for air, finally release their hold on life, and the involuntary gulp, as water infiltrates the lungs. Breathing here is like drowning in ice water.

  1. Oh, so true. I remember my first winter in Saskatchewan – the temperature took my breath away. I was amazed that people allowed children out of the house in such weather and that the kids weren’t dying from frozen lungs.

Give it a couple years, Andi, and you’ll be used to it.
